International General Leadership

As the General Leadership of an international Franciscan congregation, we are responsible for ensuring that the members of the congregation and its ministries are oriented to the life of Jesus Christ and St. Francis.

"It is the responsibility of the general leadership to consider and make decisions regarding the essential matters of the congregation. They are to have concern for the common welfare and for the individual sisters. It devolves upon them to vitalize the spirit and mission of the congregation and to preserve its unity. While remaining faithful to our tradition, they give prophetic vision to the future direction."
(General Constitution, Article 162)

In fall 2006 during our last General Chapter (the highest decision-making authority in the congregation), we together recognized our growing internationality as an organization and its effect on our identity as a congregation. The Chapter members outlined several ways in which the congregation should continue advancing this reality among us: gatherings of newer members for formation experiences and solidarity among ourselves, planned intercultural events in each Province and Region hosts other members in its own country, ministry and education opportunities in other Provinces and Region, and language studies to enhance our communication.

The General Council is elected by the General Chapter, which meets every six years. The General Council is the highest decision-making authority in our order. The Sisters elect their delegates to the General Chapter at an international level and these delegates represent the Sisters' interests.
