Hospital Sisters of the Third Order Regular of St. Francis
“The one who calls you is faithful; and he will perfect His work” cfr. 1. Thes. 5: 24
At St. Heriburg House on the afternoon of October 12, 2021, God called our dear Sister M. Barthola Thoben home to His eternal peace.
Sister M. Barthola was born on 08 May 1928 in Quakenbrück and grew up in Cloppenburg. She entered our congregation on August 05, 1949. She made her first profession on May 03, 1952.
Sister M. Barthola trained as a nurse in 1952, as a dietician in 1954 and as a dietary kitchen manager in 1957. In 1967, she received the Diploma of Teaching Qualification and Pre-service Training for Dietary Kitchen Managers. She was in charge of the diet school at St. Franziskus Hospital in Münster until 1970. In addition to her professional knowledge, she was always open to the questions and impulses of the students and gave them guidance and orientation for life.
The 1958 General Chapter elected Sister M. Barthola to the General Council. In the General Chapter of 1970, the chapter delegates elected her as the General Superior of our International Congregation. During her term, the first German Sisters laid their foundation of the present Indian Province. She was able to visit the Silesian Polish Province as the first Superior General after the Second World War.
From 1977 to 1983, Sr. M. Barthola served as Superior in our convent in St. Anna-Stift in Lohne-Kroge and then in St. Josef-Stift Sendenhorst. She was always approachable and helpful.
From 1986 to 1992, she took over the management of the home at Haus Maria-Trost. Until 2003, she worked at St. Franziskus-Hospital at the information desk and then served in the chapel at St. Heriburg-Haus. From 2006 to 2018, she lived as a senior resident at St. Anna-Stift in Lohne-Kroge.
In Franciscan simplicity, she walked the path of discipleship with faith and trust.
Sister M. Barthola had been a resident at St. Heriburg House for a good three years. In the last months, her health was not good, so that she was completely dependent on help and care. She was waiting with full of hope for Christ, the Risen Lord, who took her home to the eternal Father's house yesterday afternoon, October 12, 2021, at about 4:30 pm.
We believe that Sister M. Barthola will now share in Christ's glory. With love and gratitude, we bid her farewell and commend her in prayer to God's nearness and goodness.
We will celebrate the Eucharist on Friday, October 15, 2021 at 2.00 p.m. in the Motherhouse Church; afterwards Sister M. Barthola will be buried in our Sisters' Cemetery in Münster. Because of the Corona situation, the usual rules apply.
