Hospital Sisters of the Third Order Regular of St. Francis

Sister M. Monica Kashima

✝ Sunday, February 13th 2022

Our dear Sister, Sister M. Monica Kashima Tamai, was called to the Lord on Sunday, February 13, 2022, at the end of her life on this earth at the age of 97. She was unable to eat or drink for several days and was able to meet her natural end. Sister was born on October 28, 1924, baptized as a Catholic in 1947, she entered into our community on February 2, 1950, and professed her first vows on October 7, 1953.

Inspired by the missionary Sisters of the early days of the Japan mission, Sister Monica began her religious life with her fellow sisters, experiencing both the joys and the hardships. Let us give thanks for Sister Monica's life of consecration and pray for her long awaited eternal rest in the Lord.

Sister spent the last few years of her life at Maria Villa. She was very well cared for and looked after by all the staff. This morning, she started to have cyanosis. She spent her last moments with her sisters, who were able to visit her in her room, and passed away quietly and peacefully while being watched over.

Shortly before 1:02 p.m. when she breathed her last, I was able to inform her sister Chiyoko, who lives in Tama City, Tokyo, of Sister Monica's condition at that time. I told Sr.Monica this in her ear, and shortly thereafter she departed peacefully and quietly, as if asleep.

This evening, the sisters living in Himeji gathered for the wake service and shared their fond memories of their relationship with Sister Monica. From the very beginning, Sister Monica was a talented seamstress, and for many years she took care of the sisters' clothing and sewing needs. Most of the sisters benefited from this. She was also well known as the Sunday School teacher, Monica. She accompanied the organ, which was one of Sister Monica's favorite services. We imagine that in the long awaited heaven, she will be happy to accompany the choir of angels.

It is with gratitude that we bid farewell to Sister Monica. The Funeral Mass and Farewell Ceremony will be held on Monday, February 14, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at the Rittro Chapel, Provincial House, with Fr. Paul Fujiwara, OFM, officiating. Due to the Corona disaster, local regulations will be followed.
