Sister Mary Flynn

✝ Sunday, January 15th 2023

"When you feed the hungry and turn to the needy, then your darkness will become light; all around you light will shine as at noon." (Isaiah 58: 10)

Sister Mary Flynn gave her life back to the Creator at 6:50 a.m. on Sunday, January 15, 2023. Sister Marilyn McCormick was with Sister Mary when she died.

Sister Mary was born Oct. 5, 1930, in Litchfield, Ill. She entered the Congregation on September 8, 1949, and professed her religious vows on June 13, 1952.Sister Mary completed practical nursing training in Springfield, IL.

Sister Mary's ministries included the credit and accounting departments of HSHS hospitals in Illinois and Wisconsin and the office at St. Francis Convent. She also worked as a nurse at St. John's TB Sanitarium, Springfield, IL, HSHS hospitals in Illinois, St. Francis Convent Springfield, and St. Ann's Home, Shreveport, Louisiana.

Sister Mary had the privilege of working for many years at HSHS St. Francis Hospital in Litchfield, her hometown. As a receptionist/hostess, she reached many people with the healing presence of Christ. She knew almost everyone there and was able to offer them sisterly care.

Sister Mary was a very friendly, kind and caring person. When Sister Hugh Holtmann lived alone in Gillespie and could no longer drive, Sister Mary very faithfully visited Sister Hugh and took care of her needs, especially her shopping. Sister Helen Marie Plummer fondly remembers Sister Mary's hospitality and care when she stayed with her while attending board meetings in Litchfield.

When Sister Mary moved to the Motherhouse and could no longer drive, her frequent visits with her sister, Katherine Flynn, who lived in a nursing home in Litchfield, were interrupted. Sister Marylin McCormick faithfully brought Sister Mary to visit her sister in Litchfield.

Sister Mary was admitted to HSHS St. John's Hospital with pneumonia on January 7, 2023. On January 14, 2023, Sister Mary returned to the Motherhouse with hospice care.

We extend our sincere condolences to Sister Mary's family and friends and pledge the prayer support of the community.

The Eucharistic celebration and funeral will be held on Wednesday, January 18, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Clare of Assisi Adoration Chapel.

May Sister Mary receive her full reward from the Lord and intercede for us from heaven!
