Sister Hugh Holtmann

✝ Monday, October 3rd 2016

“Praised be You, my Lord, through our Sister Bodily Death…
Blessed are those whom death will find in Your most holy will”
Canticle of the Creatures, vs. 12-13

Sister Hugh, the former Eleanore Maria Holtmann, was born in Muelheim, Germany, on September 3, 1913. At the age of 7, Sister Hugh immigrated to America with her family to Chicago, Illinois.  She entered the Congregation on February 2, 1944, and professed her religious vows on October 4, 1946.

Sister served in Hospital Administration from 1968 to 1983. Sister Hugh then ministered as an Admitting Representative for 18 years at HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Belleville, IL.  In 2001, she retired from hospital ministry and resided in Gilliespie, Illinois.  In 2008, Sister moved her residence to St. Francis Convent, Springfield, Illinois.

Sister Death came quickly and quietly during the night for Sister Hugh, just as the Feast Day of Transitus was beginning.  In giving routine night care, the nurses came into her room moments before she peacefully passed to her new life after having lived 103 years.
