Hospital Sisters of the Third Order Regular of St. Francis

Sister M. Gilberta Beckers

✝ Tuesday, July 7th 2020

Death is the gateway to life.

(Francis of Assisi)

Early this morning, July 7, 2020, the earthly pilgrimage of our dear Sister M. Gilberta Beckers was completed in ‘St. Franziskus-Haus’ in Nordwalde.

Sister M. Gilberta was born on September 8, 1919 in Holthusen now Weener (Ems) district Leer. She joined our Congregation on September 13, 1941. Sister M. Gilberta made her first profession on January 30, 1945.

Sister M. Gilberta became a nurse in 1944 and a medical and technical assistant in 1949. She then worked in various hospitals until 1958. In 1958 she came to ‘St. Marien Hospital’ in Hückeswagen. Here she took over the administration of the laboratory. Always on call, always helpful and understanding, she met the patients and the staff. She was appreciated and respected by everyone for her humble manner. In the convent she enjoyed the community life.

When the convent was dissolved in 1991, she moved to St. Antonius House in Issum-Sevelen. Here she cared for the dining room of the residents. Her life and service was a witness of faith in the presence of God in every creature. Personal prayer and the sacred scriptures where repeatedly her sources of strength.

Sister M. Gilberta lived in ‘St. Franziskus-Haus’ in Nordwalde from October 2012 onwards. Here she had a good time together with Sr. M. Leonata, her former Superior in Issum-Sevelen. Sister M. Gilberta liked to be in the community, loved, nice little festivities, enjoyed walks, handicrafts and was interested in the events of the Order and the world. She was able to celebrate her 100th birthday in September last year well and brightly. Gradually, the strength decreased, so that she became weak and bedridden. Well prepared, she returned her life into the protective hands of God around 3:45 am this morning.

We are grateful to say goodbye to Sister M. Gilberta. We thank God for her life in our community and for all the goodness. Trusting in God's goodness and firmly believing that He will receive her into the Eternal Home, we remember her in prayer and in the celebration of the Eucharist.

The funeral is on Friday, July 10, 2020, at 10 a.m. at the convent cemetery in Nordwalde.
Because of the corona situation, the attendance will be smaller.
