Sister M. Augustalis Ahmann

✝ Tuesday, October 17th 2023

His mother said to the servers, “Do whatever he tells you.”
(The Wedding at Cana, John 2:5)

On her name day, the good and benevolent God called our dear Sister M. Augustalis, née Hedwig Ahmann, home to His eternal peace.

Sister M. Augustalis was born in Ibbenbüren and grew up in the midst of five siblings on a farm. She told us that at home they prayed a lot and often. The daily rosary accompanied her since her childhood, which was marked by the time of war. After school, she learned to cook at St. Rochus Hospital in Telgte. At the age of 25, Hedwig Ahmann entered our Congregation.

Many of us know Sister M. Augustalis as a robust ward sister of the surgical nurses' station and later as a lovingly caring sister in the novitiate of the Motherhouse. She then served for twenty years in the refectory of St. Rochus Hospital and the Convent Maria Hilf in Telgte, always solicitous of her religious sisters' welfare. Due to her age, she came to Nordwalde in 2020 as a senior Sister.

For a long time she waited for the Lord to come and to take her into His eternal kingdom, to let the earthly life behind her. In Low German she often said this. Now, He has heard her  prayer and called her home in the morning hours of October 16 on the feast of St. Hedwig.

Sister M. Augustalis was quite a character. She loved to express herself in her Westphalian Low German dialect. Her life was marked by her deep faith in a good God. At the same time she was equipped with a large portion of common sense and humor and that is how we experienced and appreciated her.

Gratefully we say farewell to Sister M. Augustalis. In prayer and in the celebration of the Eucharist, we remember her and remain united with her.
